Description: The original intention of the project was to make a bench from a piece of WPA sidewalk and add mosaic embellishments and historic pictures of irrigation to the 7’ tall working irrigation standpipe at 13th St and Ash.  After a few brainstorming sessions, with the neighborhood committee and landscape architect Ruben Valenzuela, the project expanded to designing a ground treatment, seating and planting for the entire corner.  The historical photos and the text tiles on the standpipe present the neighbors’ personal stories about flood irrigation in their lives.  SRP and the City of Tempe were generous in their support of the project by donating pipes and services.  This project won the 2005 New Times award for “Best Public Works as Public Art” and a 2007 Tempe Beautification Award of Distinction.

Neighborhood volunteers spent countless hours helping create this project.
